According to a study done by Forbes, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are both incredibly overpaid, based on their box office drawing power.
Actor and Rabbitohs diehard Russell Crowe and fellow Aussie superstar Nicole Kidman are duds at the box office, according to a survey calculating the profitability of Hollywood stars.
The Bourne Ultimatum star Matt Damon tops Forbes magazine’s first Ultimate Star Payback survey.
The magazine’s website has crunched the amount of money A-list actors are paid against their box office returns.
Out of everyone in Tinseltown, Damon gives the best return on his salary. He is twice as bankable as Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise, who command far higher salaries.
Forbes.com calculates that for every dollar paid to Damon, he generates $29 in gross income. His latest flick The Bourne Ultimatum opened at the weekend and has so far taken more than $70.2 million in America.
Back-to-back Oscar winner and critically acclaimed actor Crowe ranks at the bottom of the Forbes’ survey and appears to be a poor investment in the business of making movies. For every dollar Crowe earns, he generates just $5 in profit and comes in last out of 22 Hollywood actors.
Forbes also suggests Kidman is “wildly overpaid”.
The survey says the in-demand actor’s past three films cost about $255 million to produce and generated a combined worldwide box office of about $400 million. It calculates for every dollar Kidman earns, she produces $8 in gross income.
US sweetheart Jennifer Aniston is ranked as the most profitable Hollywood actress and comes in at No.5 on the overall list.
On the back of the crowd-pleasing The Break Up, she returns $17 for every dollar she makes.
She pips her rival Angelina Jolie, with the bombshell actress earning $15 for every dollar she takes home. But Jolie’s partner and Aniston’s ex-husband Brad Pitt makes up for the shortfall, coming in at No.2 behind Damon.
Pitt generates a whopping $24 for every dollar he is paid.
Aniston’s former boyfriend Vince Vaughn is tied for third spot with Pirates of the Caribbean heart-throb Johnny Depp. Both actors make $21 for every dollar they pocket.
“The biggest stars in Hollywood are not the actors that deliver the biggest returns,” Forbes senior editor Michael Ozanian said.
I know the implication is that Nicole Kidman really can’t act, but let’s give her credit: she successfully pulled off the role of Tom Cruise’s beard for like a decade. Yes, her movies suck, but the poor thing is probably still traumatized.
